French municipalities urged to take a greater role in shaping the future of schools

As France prepares for the new school year, the debate over education is once again dominated by national priorities, academic standards and government reform. Yet a growing movement is arguing that some of the most meaningful changes may come from much closer to the classroom.

L’École Change Demain, a non-partisan civic organisation focused on education, is calling on municipalities to play a more active role in shaping local education policy. Following a 100-day tour of towns and cities across France, the group has identified three main areas where mayors and local authorities can act, while also launching a new network, Le Cercle des communes, to help municipalities share experience and replicate successful initiatives.

The organisation’s recent tour brought together more than 2,000 participants across 25 municipalities. Around 1,200 children were invited to describe their ideal school, 110 workshops were organised and 18 public consultations brought residents and elected representatives together. Sixty local education initiatives were also identified during the process.
