Business Owner Job Losses Hit Record High as 33,341 Entrepreneurs Are Affected in First Half of 2026

France recorded a new high in business owner job losses during the first half of 2026, with 33,341 entrepreneurs losing their employment, according to the latest Entrepreneurs’ Employment Observatory produced by the GSC association and Altares.

The figure represents an increase of almost 7% compared with the same period in 2025 and equates to more than 180 business owners losing their livelihood every day.
While owners of the smallest businesses remain the most exposed, the figures indicate that financial difficulties are increasingly reaching larger and more established companies.

Executives running businesses with fewer than three employees accounted for almost three quarters of all recorded job losses during the first six months of the year.

However, 694 entrepreneurs heading companies with at least 20 employees were also affected.
The deterioration was particularly pronounced among companies employing more than 50 people, where business owner job losses increased by nearly 52%.
A similar pattern emerges when businesses are classified by turnover.
